remember SUPERMARKET?

should be on shelves in February, and here are the first two covers for the first issue, the regular one by Kristian Donaldson, and my variant. I'll be doing a variant cover for each of the 4 issues of this mini-series.

and the official solicitation text:

Supermarket #1
(w) Brian Wood
(a) Kristian Donaldson
IDW Publishing

"Cash Rules Everything Around Me". In the future world of SUPERMARKET, it's the literal truth. Legitimate and black market economies rule the City, overseen by the vying factions of the Yakuza and Porno Swede crime families. Convenience store clerkette and 16-yo suburban wise-ass Pella Suzuki suddenly finds herself in the middle of it all, heir to an empire she couldn't possibly inherit, but hitmen on both sides aren't taking any chances. Co-created and written by Brian Wood (Demo, DMZ, The Couriers), SUPERMARKET is street level anti-consumerism with a healthy dose of violence and humor. Kristian provides lush, powerful artwork and makes this future world as real as if it were now.

This sounds like something I'd like.

So many things to remember...

wait, did you actually DRAW that vending machine behind her?

brianwood From: [info]brianwood Date: October 13th, 2005 02:48 pm (UTC) (Link)
most of it, yeah. compiled about 5 pics of machines together on the lightbox, redrew much of it, scanned it back in.

its the logos on the bottles and the series of white lines down the bottom that get me. such a great asthetic though, like bitmapped photos with none of the downsides to them
brianwood From: [info]brianwood Date: October 13th, 2005 02:58 pm (UTC) (Link)
yeah, the labels are bitmapped from the originals because I knew I couldn't fake that, although the larger signs up top i made from scratch or altered for legal reasons. Quality Process and jdang seo i made up, Coffee King was Coffee Boss, etc.

and you're right, redrawing printouts is a great and legal way to acheive that sort of effect.

Looks awesome.

Who's the publisher? Or are you venturing into the world of self-publishing?

brianwood From: [info]brianwood Date: October 13th, 2005 02:46 pm (UTC) (Link)
just realized that link doesn't work.

this is the IDW project I've spoken about before.

Looks great. I remember long long ago when you posted some try-out pages Kristian did from FIGHT FOR TOMORROW. I've been following his work ever since; it' great to see it all finally come full circle.
brianwood From: [info]brianwood Date: October 13th, 2005 03:46 pm (UTC) (Link)
he also did some very cool but very cool Couscous Express fan art back in the days of the WEF.

you should interview him.

Think it looks great, btw. Congrats, Brian. The next couple months (and hopefully extending outward) look to be pretty exciting for you. I can't wait to start seeing this stuff in print.
